The above is an example of Contextualization and Thesis for the question "To what extent, if any, did the demographic and environmental conditions of Jamestown cause so many colonists to die in the early years of settlement?"
In Blue: Contextualization- it sets the framework for the reader that deals with "when and where did the settlement at Jamestown happen and what else was going on at the time". (3-4 sentences, you will not be awarded the point for merely a phrase or a reference)
In Green: Thesis- It is a clear and concise statement in the final sentence of the introductory paragraph that presents the argument to the reader. You take a position on the question that has been asked, and then you explain in two to three broad statements how you plan to defend that position. (1 sentence, you will not be awarded the point for merely a restatement of the question.)
